Lectura y Escritura para la Investigaci¾n

Addressed to teachers and researchers of all disciplines with the purpose of helping higher education instructors become mediators of critical understanding and written academic communication, this edited collection is the product of the work of a team of researchers in the fields of linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, education, and psychology, committed to the objectives set by the UNESCO Chair for the Improvement of Equity and Quality of Education in Latin America based on Reading and Writing, which has offices and sub-offices in most Latin American countries. It is composed of ten chapters focused on academic genres, especially the research article and the abstract. The topics covered include the meaning of academic literacy in the context of higher education, literature as a bridge to the reading of non-literary texts, the composition of the research problem, the introduction and conclusion of the article, the management of citations and references, argumentation, the writing of academic synthesis by students, abstracts for academic journals, grammatical issues in writing, and, finally, the meaning of the concept of literacy means for the development of critical reading and written production. The book is of great interest and relevance to teachers and students, as it reveals the intimate relation between the processes of reading, writing, and research.

About the Editors

Adriana Bolívar is Professor of Linguistics and Discourse studies at Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV). She holds an M. Phil in Education by the University of London and a Ph. D. in Linguistics by the University of Birmingham (UK). Her research and publications cover systemic functional grammar, text linguistics, descriptive and critical discourse analysis, sociopragmatics, impoliteness, academic and professional discourse, political discourse and dialogue analysis. She is founder of the Latin American Association of Discourse studies and Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair for reading and writing in Latin America at UCV.

Rebecca Beke (1945-2016) was Professor of Applied Linguistics at Universidad Central de Venezuela. She earned her Master of Arts by the University of New Yok and a Ph.D. in Discourse Studies by Universidad Central de Venezuela. Her research and publications cover academic discourse, metadiscourse in academic texts, grammar, reading and writing in English as a foreign language and Spanish as first language. She was coordinator and teacher of the Master´s degree in English as a Foreign Language and co-coordinator of the UNESCO Chair for reading and writing in Latin America at UCV.
