Established in 1997, the Campus Writing and Speaking Program offers extensive support to faculty across twelve collegiate units and 68 departments in a continuous effort to enhance students’ written, oral, and digital communication competencies and to use these modalities to improve students’ learning of subject matter. The CWSP was the first program at a large research-extensive university to integrate support for both writing and speaking and to establish a departmentally-focused approach, now commonly known at “WEC,” or “writing-enriched curriculum,” but including oral and now digital communication. In addition to working with individual departments to assist in realizing carefully articulated communication outcomes through faculty and curricular development and to continuously assess these outcomes, the CWSP provides a wide array of programming, including a semester-long faculty seminar, workshops on specific topics, guest presenters, focused lunch sessions, a certificate program, individual consultations, and collaborations with other units on campus, including the Office for Faculty Excellence, University Libraries, the Office of Accreditation and Assessment, the Undergraduate Writing Center, and the Graduate School. NC State University has been listed multiple times in US News and World Report’s best colleges and universities for its support of students’ writing across disciplines.
